2 Years Since Losing Shannon

Today  marks 2 years since my best friend Shannon was
killed through an act of Domestic Violence.
and an amazing beautiful person was taken from so many people who loved her..
As a whole..each year seems to get easier.
But certain days are easier than others.

I flew into atlanta for a quick 1.5 day trip a couple weeks ago.
And even though I never said it out loud...
that night in the hotel I had a dream...
I was sobbing.
and was wishing I could go down the street to see Shannon.
Deep down I felt like a trip back home to atlanta
wasn't complete without seeing her.

Sometimes I watch the video I made below...just to hear her voice in the first clip.
The last voice mail she left me..that didn't show up till she was already gone.
Some days I just can't watch much further.
While other days I cling to those memories because it was my last moments with 'her'...

The day I walked into her house for the first time since I
walked through that door WITH her...was a hard day.
But also a beautiful one because I was able to see her sweet babies happy and growing.
I look back..and remember how when it first happened.. I just remember this incredible weight I felt. sadness. anger. I felt like I could just tilt and fall right over.
I remember asking my mom if I would ever not feel this way.
But over time I found strength.. and motivation to be a good mom and wife and friend.
I remember finding it so hard to want to socialize with other moms...feeling like a best friend was taken and how could I ever have that connection with anyone else...
but then suddenly it turned into a desire to be with other moms to take advantage of the time we have..the moments we have of interacting with people, to make them happy..to invest time into friendships because you never know when you will lose that person.
I started to realize that God puts people in your life for a reason.
Don't take advantage of the time that you have... and the people in your life.

I remember the first e-mail I got from a reader telling me how shannon's story changed their life and gave them strength to act when in a domestic violence situation.
I remember thinking THIS.... this is why I started this blog so long ago.
If my words on this blog can help ONE person..then YESSSS... it is worth it.

It is very easy to be angry over losing shannon.
I have gone through many stages of grief.. numbness, disbelief, sadness, and I'm definitely JUST leaving anger... I'm trying to shake that.. to not focus on the details of how she was taken...and WHO took her...but how we had shannon for those years.

I never want to forget the good memories..
the goofing off..

the time we were extras for a movie in atlanta.
goofing off on the set and having fun.
(bobby jones: stroke of genius)

going to dances!
getting all dressed up... cassie's mom doing our hair.. ;)
feeling pretty and dancing the night away!

the bridal shower the girls threw me...
when they blindfolded me and took me to a restaurant.
(I just found, during the move, the little notebook that they
all wrote in the pages and gave to me. I re-read shannon's page more than once.)

and having her there next to me the day
I was getting married.. getting our hair done.

I'm trying to hold onto those good memories.
I will always miss you shannon...but happy to have had you in my life.
blessed actually.
blessed to have had you in my life.

Walking back into Shannon's House- Step towards Healing

I've been putting off this post for a month...
I recently was back home in atlanta and was able to visit my best friend, Shannon's, children.
The estranged father of her children shot her during a custody exchange in a bank parking lot. the horrific details and what followed I don't wish to write out again.
I had seen the children before since the tragedy...
but this visit was the first one to her house.
The last time I walked through that door...was with shannon.

---I had photos to share of us from my phone.. but I was asked to remove them to protect the kids. I guess their father's parents are trying to get photos of them for him. The fact that I cannot even share them in my life right now makes me sooo angry. He continues to take from us. But I am trying to understand and will not post photos of them to protect them from him and be happy to have those memories and photos for myself.----

My stomach was turning in knots. so many emotions.
I was so excited to see their sweet faces and so scared to relive moments at her house.
As I walked in the door and was hugged by these two cuties and by shannon's dad and step mom.. I fought back the tears.. till the kids were away jumping on my brother.. and then I cried. and Karen told me it was ok to cry. I told her I didn't want every memory the kids had of me to be me crying. I wanted to be strong. but I needed that moment.
A hug.. and some words of wisdom from her and then I was quickly whisked away by emma to see her new room!

I didn't realize how hard it was going to be to make that trip until we were turning into her neighborhood... luckily I was going with my brother
(who was also best friends with shannon) and his wife mary.
They made me feel stronger.

These sweet beautiful children are so joyful. so full of life.
and good huggers. :) and will take pictures for cookies.

I felt like I was in a dream... I was standing in the family room holding micah smiling, watching the kids wrestle with david.. and as I looked up I saw the balcony.. and remembered walking up those steps with shannon. or her running up to grab something and then standing there looking down.

Her daughter was so excited to show me her new room
(that some very generous wonderful friends, and strangers, had made over for her.)
It used to be shannon's room.
The new space was freshly painted. It was so beautiful..with a huge cinderella carriage bed.. one of a kind art work.. beautiful details. She had photos of her mommy on the wall next to her bed. many of them from my wedding day. (she was a bridesmaid)

Pretty sure the last time I was in her room... We had been out toilet papering and shaving creaming our friend's car in the target parking lot (he was the target security guard. he caught us. I ended up hand cuffed to his car. haha.)
we ended the night at her house making cookies and singing and dancing in her room.
We laughed so hard that night.
Below we were in shannon's room... I'm wearing the scarf she made me.
one year for christmas she made all of us girls one. :)
My sophie talks about shannon a lot.
"mama you know your sister.. your friend..who is in heaven..
and is an angel now...I can't wait to go there too and be an angel!"
(she thinks she is my sister even though I've explained it many times.)

When Emma was holding micah...meeting him for the first time..
it made me think back to when I would come in town and Shannon and I
would get together and smile over our babies together.
(black and white photo was our last time together.. introducing our little babies.)

for shannon's sweet children,
your mama was amazing.
she was beautiful.
she was funny.
she loved to laugh and be silly.
she was creative. she always loved when my mom would
give her yarn from our basement that was always stocked with it.
she was spiritual. I remember staying up late talking about our faith our relationship with God..and about boys.. about respecting ourselves and wanting that guy that would treat us right.
she had a sweet tooth. I remember always getting arby's chocolate milk shakes (and curly fries) after XLT (adoration night at a local high school)
she liked to sing into hair brushes.
she was adventurous and we would always go to a rock climbing place and she would zoom up the mountain. usually attacking me at least once with the chalk for your hands.
she was kind.
she loved you.
she LOVED you.
and talked about you all the time.
every phone call revolved around you both and my girls.
about how you guys were growing so much.. how much or how little you slept..
how amazing you were........

I'll never forget your mama.
and I'll never let you either.
I love you both so much... and know that one day when you are older you will read this...
and I hope that I can bring her to life for you through these memories.

Some days are harder than others.

Today Shannon would have turned 27.
Missing her.. wishing I could face time with her and have my girls sing to her. :(
A part of me feels like it's just the long distance of atlanta and
pittsburgh and busy mom lives we had that is what's keeping us a part.

When my mom was just here visiting..we were talking about shannon.
I was telling her how it feels like our childhood years
together feels like another life.. so long ago.

This was back on my 18th birthday. (mine is in january)
Shannon was in my dream the other night.
In the dream I had found an old video of her and
I was watching it over and over..happy that I had another "view" of her.

Every single night on the news...
there is some sort of case of domestic violence.
It pulls on my heart every time.
WIth each case that I hear, I think of Shannon.
Please continue to pray for all those affected by domestic violence.
speak up and help those you know around you...
you might save a life.

Heavy Hearted

I posted a while back how we went down to charlotte for a summer trip..
spent the 4th of july with my family there...

I was so excited to make the trip..but it also brought up in me memories of shannon..
memories that made me even MORE emotional than I already am.
(crazy hormonal pregnant lady here.)

The last time I heard shannon's voice she was calling me to figure out
plans for meeting in Charlotte around the same time last year...for a summer visit.
We were so excited to let the kids play together. to catch up. to actually be in the same state!

I missed that call. So I only have a voicemail from her..
We never got to make that trip. because a few days later she was murdered.
So the whole time I was packing.. and the whole drive down.. and the whole time I was there... a part of me was thinking about her. and how it could have been.
I had a heavy heart as we drove home. It just felt..like something was missing.
someone was missing.

His court day was scheduled for thursday..but got moved back again to august.
Been thinking a lot lately about all of us missing shannon..
and having to go through this. especially her parents and siblings.. her two little kids..
Please send up some prayers for all of us.
A part of me just wants that part to be over and done with.

If you..or someone you know..or barely know..
is experiencing domestic violence..
please..do something about it.
It still comforts me..the message that I recieved a while after shannon was killed..of a woman in brazil, who after reading her story on my blog, took her child and left the domestic violence she was experiencing in her home. Take that first step..or help someone else take it.

One year ago.. I was broken. healing slowly.

(Written the evening of June 4th....)
One year ago tomorrow..
I got the phone call that crushed me and left me broken..healing slowly.
Time heals the hurt..but there are days it still feels like a fresh blow..
where, when I think about it too much, I shake my head no, as if to snap myself out of it.
take a deep breath and carry on with what I was doing..

On year ago tomorrow...It was really late. A crazy day. I was running to the grocery store down the street by myself while ben stayed home with the sleeping babies. (ps. was scolded by my worried mom but it was the only time I could make that happen. I was going to be "fast.")

I was in the freezer section...eggos actually.
And my phone rang. It was my sister val.. She had called once before.. I thought it was something work related or to chit chat so I had planned on calling her once I got home. But I picked up this time.
This conversation is etched in my mind..I go over it sometimes..
wishing it had a different ending.

"Natalie.. where are you?"
"Oh I'm at the store had to grab a couple things"
"Natalie are you by yourself"
"Yeah.. ?.. ben's home with the girls trying to be fast.. what's up?"
"Call me when you get home to ben"
"What? No.. just tell me"
"Ok. ::pause:: This is going to be hard.. Shannon was shot. Chris shot her.
(I expected her to say...she is in the hospital..fly down right now)
"He killed her.... Shannon is dead.."
My only response was what?....wait what? then no..no no no....
I felt cold..and numb..and started crying..
I asked "What happened? How?....I didn't understand..
She gave me the little details she had.. and then I told her I was going to go home.
I would call her later.
I continued to cry....and took my cart to the checkout.. numb.
I didn't know what else to do but to check out...the cart was full.. I was going through the motions..
The checkout lady asked me if I was ok...
"My best friend was just killed...she was shot."
I said it, ending it like it was a question.
Looking back.. I sometimes think about that poor cashier lady who was working the late shift.
I wonder if she ever thinks about me and shannon. If she ever says a prayer for her.

My mom called me. I told her I was going home to ben I would call her when I got back safe.
I drove home..trying not to cry so I could see the road.
I called ben and told him..
I pulled in the house and he just held me as I cried.
Then I called my mom..because I knew she was worried.
Then things started to go in slow motion...... for months.

It doesn't seem like it has been a year.
I don't know how a year already passed by. I seriously don't.
It feels like 6 months..tops.

It feels like we just got the horrible news..that didn't seem real.
I remember asking my mom on the phone, crying, will I ever not feel like "this??"
What "this" was....I can't even describe.
But just... broken. a lump in your throat. sad. angry. bitter. regret. guilt.
So many emotions that you feel like you could explode except
at the same time you feel like you are too numb to feel anything at all.

Through all of this.. learning how to grieve.. I am so blessed by my husband. and my mom. and all of my family and friends..and the random strangers and blog readers who have given me encouragement and prayers and reached out to my best friend's kids with prayers and gifts and donations..

I still think of her almost every day in some way.
Usually, at night when I am holding sienna and putting her to bed...I think about her.
and her two children.
I would like to say that I pray every time...but sometimes..I'm just sad.
I want to start "actively" saying a prayer when I am sad and missing her.
Ben and I pray for shannon and her kids and her family and friends every night.
We pray for all those affected by domestic violence.
But it's those random moments in the day that I want to take action in..
and respond to that sadness with prayer..
for all those in the middle of DV or grieving over shannon too.

One year and..
--I still struggle with the idea that someone can take another person's life so violently..
that it actually happens... and that it happened to shannon.
--I still struggle with regret. wishing I would have said more. did more.
--I struggle with wishing for those moments we never will get..
instead of being content and joyful over the ones we had.
-But I'm working on it..and praying.. and healing.

Please lift up in your prayers today all of us missing our sweet shannon.
That we may heal... and remember the good moments with shannon.
That we may forgive... and know that shannon would have wanted us too.
And that we may pray for others experiencing the horrible affects of domestic violence.

Shannon was such a holy beautiful young woman..
And I know she is watching over us from above.. especially us moms.. and those experiencing domestic violence.. She is our angel!

They are having a memorial and healing service tomorrow..
It will be hard not being there with everyone. A part of me wants to just fly down.
I'll be thinking of everyone..and praying with them for healing.
I think I'll clean the tub tomorrow.. maybe do laundry. and miss her.

Shannon's dad asked me to include this in my post today.

Not Alone

Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 5:58am · By Shannon's Dad, R. Lawrence

Dwana G. Horner recently wrote on this site wall "I wished I had more conversations with Shannon when she lived next door to me..maybe she would still be here..maybe not, that question will never be answered now."

I've been pondering this post for over a month;  I've seen how many people feel the same about Shannon's battle with her abuser and their feeling of helplessness and regret.  So many of her family and friends have made this very same comment as Dwana.  As the first year living without her closes in, I've realized just how many people are not alone in this feeling.  I too have often thought of the "what ifs" so many times.

Reality is that everyone that knew Shannon and knew what she was going through and how hard she worked to free herself feels like they should have done more.  It is a feeling that will never leave anyone that loved her.  And in the same situation again, no one that was affected by Shannon and her death will ever view domestic violence and abuse in an uninvolved and detached way.  However, we all have to come to the understanding that Shannon indeed was very strong those last months.  And moreover, we don't yet know what transpired that fateful day and most likely will never know all the facts that lead that person to take her life.  It is quite possible that she made the ultimate mother's sacrifice to protect her children from this man forever.  We must have faith that she knew she had been prepared her whole life to enter God's eternal kingdom of love in a way that only she could have known.

She fully understood this world is not the end.  Find comfort that Shannon was truly ready for eternal life at Jesus' side.  In a post I shared July 13, 2011 on this site, Shannon wrote to me once, "Ever since I was little I felt something different in me, something seemingly deeper than most.  I know now that it is from God, preparing me."

"I have a gift, many gifts, especially that of being passionate about my faith and knowing it and being able to spread that knowledge and love to others.  I just need to find the courage to follow it...."

"If I do not, then I will never feel complete."

When you find yourself mourning for Shannon as June 5 arrives, find comfort that Shannon was "complete" at the end of her life here on Earth.

More Women will Suffer Violence Today

on Friday, October 28, 2011 at 6:54pm ·

A Message from Shannon's Dad

I'm already being asked by the media for my reaction to today's news from the arraignment, in that the State of Georgia is seeking the death penalty for Shannon's murder and associated crimes against her, the state, and her children.  I don't think there is much I can say at this point about the case.  I have every confidence in District Attorney Paul Howard and his office in this matter.

This is the beginning of a very long process to bring justice for the malice aforethought and violent murder of my daughter after years of suffering abuse at the hands of the accused.  There are scores of family and friends that immensely loved Shannon and that will forever remain victims of the most atrocious act a man can commit against a woman and his children that he professes to love.  And there are many people as evidenced on this memorial page that have been touched not only by Shannon's life, but by her passing as well.

My prayer is that Shannon's death and story will be seen around the world and understood by other women that are being abused by their partner.   It is ill-fated when a woman accepts abuse from a man of any kind, be it verbal, emails, texts, or the most violent in physical abuse.  I pray that these women will reach out and be given the strength to recognize the signs of abuse and to break the bond that endangers their lives and those they love.

Domestic violence knows no boundaries in culture and socioeconomic status, so do not think you are immune to it.  It should be a concern for every responsible family, school, church, and corporation.   As friends, we need to be responsible and intervene when we see the signs of abuse, not pass it off as meddling in a relationship and find excuses to keep quiet.   You are not a friend and neighbor of love when you look the other way and think it is not your business.  If you do not know how to intervene, look up your local Family Violence Center or use the national hotline URL address below and ask for advice.  Get involved.   Your friend could end up like Shannon if you remain silent.

Please share this note on your page and spread the word that crimes against women will be punished, and it is not okay to violate, control, or harass a woman under any circumstances especially under the guise of love.  It may be your friend that you save.

****On a side note.
I peed my pants when I sneezed today. First time with this pregnancy.
The husband was very happy to be present when it happened so he could laugh really hard....
I've been having braxton hicks contractions lately.
I think it's partially from being dehydrated. partially from stress.
So trying to...drink more and stress less... :)
